La Traviata

Giuseppe Verdi

Reduced Orchestration: 1(picc)011 1100 11111 timp (opt)

Flute/Piccolo, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Trumpet, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Timpani (optional)

This orchestral reduction of Verdi’s La Traviata is aimed for performance using ten players. The timpani part, for an eleventh player, is optional. The off-stage harp part is written ‘pizzicato’ into the string parts.

The arrangement also works with a large string section for which a slightly differing set of string parts are available (minimum 2 x Violin I, 2 x Violin II).

This reduction was first performed with ten players at Iford Opera, UK, in 2001, and first performed with an enlarged string section at Longborough Festival Opera, UK in 2002. Recent performances have taken place in New Zealand, Iceland, the UK and the USA. In 2021 it was performed by Opera Holland Park in the UK in collaboration with the City of London Sinfonia.

The 16-strong orchestra from the City of London Sinfonia sounded well-sprung, sensitively paced and, when the occasion demanded, surprisingly massive, but with fine filigree work from woodwinds and solo violin”
