The Magic Flute (Die Zauberflöte)

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Reduced Orchestration: 1(picc)111 1000 11111 Timp/Perc (optional) Glock

Flute/Piccolo, Oboe, Clarinet, Bassoon, Horn, Violin I, Violin II, Viola, Cello, Double Bass, Timpani (optional), Bass Drum (on-stage), Keyboard Glockenspiel (on-stage)

This orchestral reduction of Mozart’s The Magic Flute is aimed for performance using ten players. In addition it requires an eleventh player to play keyboard glockenspiel (though this can be played by the conductor or a member of the cast). A timpani part is available and is optional. This reduced orchestration can also be performed with an enlarged string section.

Recent performances include Fundacio Escola Superior de Musica de Catalunya; Opera Kelowna, Canada; Vivazza E.V., Germany; Musica Viva Ltd, Hong Kong; and a number of performances throughout the UK and USA. It was performed by Mid Wales Opera in the UK in 2017, reviewed by The Spectator.

This orchestral reduction is complete and includes all the music from the opera. The score and parts have rehearsal numbers and bar numbers.

The quality of the reduced orchestration (for forces just ten strong) made by Jonathan Lyness and the skillful musicianship with which it was played and the recipe is complete.”
